On Mother's Day 2000, a movement was born: 800,000 people in 74 communities across America rallied together to lobby for legislation to adopt sensible gun control guidelines and laws. Celebrity supporters included Rosie O'Donnell, Courtney Love, Susan Sarandon, Anna Quindlen, and former Surgeon General Dr. Antonia Novello, as well as nearly a million outspoken moms. After listening to mothers speaking about their maternal instinct to protect their young, the devastating losses they've suffered, and the travesty of justice and common sense behind contemporary gun laws, I don't imagine there will be a dry eye or comfortable NRA member in the viewer's house. While gun control is an emotional issue fraught with questions regarding individual civil liberties under the U.S. Constitution, this program doesn't purport to show both sides: Moms want laws to protect their children, pure and simple. When it's easier to get a gun than a library card, as one mother states, the viewer has to wonder about legal accountability. If they can make a child-proof baby aspirin bottle, surely a fool-proof lock on a handgun can't be that technically challenging. This professionally lensed, non-narrated program issues a poignant and serious wake up call to Americans: listen to your mothers. Highly recommended. Aud: I, J, H, P. (N. Plympton)
