On February 3, 1998, a cause célèbre ended when Karla Faye Tucker became the first woman to be executed in Texas since the Civil War for a vicious double pickax murder committed some 15 years earlier. A former prostitute and drug addict, Tucker underwent a religious conversion in prison and turned her life over to God. Here, two relatives of one of the victims, Deborah Thornton, respond to Tucker's metamorphosis from cold-blooded killer to gentle child of God. Ron, the victim's brother, rebounded from the tragedy to become a born-again Christian himself, and was able to forgive Karla Faye. Thornton's widowed husband, Richard, did not forgive, rejoicing in Tucker's punishment. Viewers watch as these personal dramas are played out through prison interviews with Tucker, Ron's Christian revelations, and the unspoken witness of vigilantes gathered for the "event." Whether people view it as a story of salvation or one of retribution, it offers a chance to explore one's views on the issue of capital punishment. An absorbing social and political document as well as a testament to Christian faith, this is recommended. Aud: H, P. (J. Reed)
