A two-disc compilation of four original programs from the History Channel, The Race to the Moon kicks off with Failure Is Not an Option, which takes its title from heroic NASA flight director Gene Krantz (who also appears on the DVD bonus audio commentary), who guides his resourceful mission control team through the triumphs and disasters of the early and middle-era space program. Apollo 13--an episode from Modern Marvels--covers some of the same territory while focusing on the treacherous but ultimately successful return of Apollo 13 after the historic onboard explosion that crippled the spacecraft en route to its aborted lunar landing. The Space Shuttle--another episode of Modern Marvels--details the development, original launch in 1981, and ongoing success (despite two fatal disasters) of NASA's industrial workhorse, as well as a glimpse of forthcoming shuttle designs, including the futuristic X-33. Finally, Code Name: Project Orion explores the top-secret development of nuclear propulsion systems theoretically capable of sending gigantic spaceships on long-range missions beyond our solar system. Featuring interviews with such noteworthy physicists as Freeman Dyson, this last title lends a forward-looking perspective to the nostalgic tone of the other three programs. Nicely spotlighting the awesome achievements that took place during America's golden age of space exploration, this is recommended. Aud: J, H, C, P. (J. Shannon)
