Chronicling the history of America's neon oasis, this 4-tape series, narrated by Richard Crenna, features interviews with author Nicholas Pileggi (Casino), Milton Berle, Debbie Reynolds, entrepreneur Steve Wynn, and social commentator Michael Ventura, among others. Since I'm headed to Las Vegas in April to watch a chess tournament (I'm not kidding), I popped in the final episode, House of Cards, for an up-to-date overview. While trivia buffs will enjoy some of the info-nuggets (Vegas introduced topless dancers in 1957, but the pasties didn't come off until 1960; slot machines account for 70% of casino revenues, etc.), the program veered back and forth unevenly between footage of the strip and strippers (or exotic dancers) and such topics as the Paiute people's contributions to the local economy. An optional purchase. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
