According to the U.S Bureau of Justice Statistics, two-thirds of former inmates will be rearrested within three years of release. Having a plan to meet basic needs of the newly freed is one way to help stop the revolving door of recidivism. Centered on the essentials of housing, transportation, clothing, identification, and other necessities, The Road to Reentry: Meeting Your Basic Needs features interviews with professionals in the correction system and former prisoners, who offer straightforward instruction and advice on building a new life on the outside. In prison, food and shelter are a given, but many former prisoners have an extremely hard time adjusting to a life of choices in the wider society. The key is to anticipate needs, create a plan, and then stick to it. Even homecomings can be difficult: one woman interviewed here decided to move back into her parents' home so that her children could get into a good school district, but she knew it would be difficult, noting that “there were issues I had to deal with like trust and my mom bringing up difficult things from the past.” Putting the needs of her family before her own helped her prepare for tough conversations and situations. For others, however, going “home” is a bad plan, especially if one will be surrounded by people and situations that led to incarceration. Since a first job upon release may not be in walking distance, transportation will also be a necessity, not just for work but also for court-mandated meetings and other responsibilities during parole. The most powerful message here is that asking others for assistance may be a person's best bet for staying free and building a new life. Experts say that those who seek help—from friends, family, churches, social service agencies, parole officers, and others—have the strongest chance of success. The other titles in The Road to Reentry series are Finding Employment, Making Healthy Choices, Reconnecting with Family and Community, and Succeeding on the Job. Recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
