Many fascinating films have been made out of little-known events in American history and the subject of this video could make another Hollywood blockbuster. During the War with Mexico (1846-1848), several Irish-American soldiers deserted the American army to fight alongside the Mexicans, earning their battalion--the St. Patrick's--a revered place in Mexican military history. The story of the ‘San Patricios' spotlights the racial tensions of that period and the mistrust that many Irish Catholics felt in their newly adopted land. Having left Ireland during the midst of the devastating potato famine, the Irish found themselves the objects of ridicule, prejudice, and hatred. Irish-American soldiers who enlisted in the Army found conditions no better; their officers berated them and refused to let them practice their religion. It was no wonder that many Irish felt a kinship with the Mexicans; they shared a religion, a history of oppression, and a love for a simpler way of life. This video skillfully covers many topics--Irish history, immigration policy in the United States, and the questionable reasons for the Mexican War. Photographs, excerpts from letters, and a realistic re-enactment of the formation of the "San Patricios" make this a good choice. Aud: H, C, P. (J.Carlson)
