Two things are generally true about titles from Bullfrog Films: they're usually extremely well-made and extremely expensive. This wonderful nature documentary on the biggest mammals on Earth is a perfect example. Much of the emphasis here is on the communication between whales-as-individuals and "pods" (small clusters of whales), with a look at new scientific research that examines the meanings of the various "songs" and asks whether man-made sonar noise interferes with whale quality of life. The program also explores whale migration patterns (long a mystery to marine biologists), which are now being revealed through Global Positioning System tracking devices. Featuring truly beautiful videography, excellent computer animation, and enlightening interviews, this tape is highly recommended for libraries that can afford it. Those looking for less expensive alternatives for general collections should consider PBS Video's Secrets of the Ocean Realm (VL-7/98), a 5-hour set with a half-hour segment on whales, priced at $69.95 for the series, or Discovery Channel Video's In the Company of Whales (VL-9/92), priced at $19.99.
