Cowabunga, dudes! Nope, this video is not about the Green Teens of screen and stage fame, but about the Original Turtles: the 60s surf-cum-social-protest-cum-pop band that rolled out a red carpet of hits during the mid- to late 60s. Howard Kaylan (lead singer) and Mark Volman (the roly poly dude with the glasses and curls), a.k.a. Flo & Eddie, are the primary interviewees for this excellent documentary which chronicles the rise of the band from its early high school inception as The Crossfires through its heydays. As well as other band members, guest interviewees include Graham Nash, Spanky McFarlane (Spanky and the Gang), Ray Manzarek (The Doors), and many others. As well as featuring early music videos of The Turtles' classics "Happy Together," "It Ain't Me Babe," "She'd Rather Be With Me," "Elenore," "She' My Girl," and others, the program features loads of great 60s gossip (including some raunch on Tom Jones). Sure to be popular, this excellent overview of The Turtles is recommended. (Available from most distributors.)
