The buxom bikini girls and chiseled-physique guys on display here might qualify The Ultimate Wave Tahiti as the Baywatch of IMAX cinema, but the mega-cheesecake factor is unexpectedly matched by a splash of redeeming “edu-tainment.” Director Stephen Low uses large-format cameras to follow 10-time world champion surfing legend Kelly Slater and Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer as they seek to conquer the legendary waves in Tahiti's Teahupo'o area, which are spawned by the currents and geological configuration of the island chain. The film shifts from a mellow Endless Summer vibe (and music) to a CGI-heavy science lecture on the physics, wind, and gravitational origin of big water. Boasting oodles of sumptuous wide-angle imagery—ranging from stunning coral reefs to the isle's volcanic mountain landscape—the documentary also features cultural background information that includes low-tech CGI representations of Polynesian gods (somehow managing to be both respectful and tiki-tastic). DVD extras include a short travelogue and five vignettes, including one on surfboard design. Recommended. Aud: P. (C. Cassady)
