An intermittently powerful anthology of five short films about the impact of the current administration’s immigration policies on those seeking to enter the United States, especially from Latin and South America. Stephanie Schiavenato’s Landfall is a personal tale that describes the fraught entrance of her mother into the country and the difficulty her brother encountered in attempting to join her. Sara Gonzalo’s brief What Would You Pack is concerned with the belongings individuals trying to cross the southern border choose to bring with them; interviews with a few of them are juxtaposed with queries posed to Americans on the street about what they would pack if they were faced with a similar situation. Returned, by Meredith Hoffman and Sarah Kuck, introduces members of a Honduran family who were refused permission to enter the U.S. They describe the dangerous conditions in their homeland that drive them to seek asylum. Laura Herrero Garvin’s Erasing the Border follows artist Ana Teresa Fernández’s project to paint a portion of the wall the precise color of the blue sky to make the structure seem to disappear. What Happens to a Dream Deferred, by Scott Boehm and Peter Johnston, profiles two young Michigan men who were brought into the country by their parents as children—and whose ability to remain in the U.S. will be threatened by the possible revocation of the Obama administration’s DACA program. Some of the segments are inevitably stronger than others, but overall this is an affecting compilation about the contemporary immigrant experience. A strong optional purchase.
