Nearly everything you ever wanted to know about the tropical fish keeping industry is found in director Richard Pabis' The Wonderful World of Fish Keeping—from its historic roots to the modern methods used to raise and distribute fish all over North America. The program visits major aquariums (such as the Vancouver Aquarium in Canada, the Florida Aquarium, and the Aquarium of the Americas in New Orleans), where viewers are treated to a close-up look at how the big places keep their water fresh and their fish happy. Ichthyologist Dr. Herbert R. Axelrod is credited for having discovered and domesticated many of the species of fish we're familiar with today—including the ubiquitous neon tetra from South America—and the film illustrates how his early work permeates modern fish keeping. Viewers will also discover that Florida (specifically Fort Lauderdale and Tampa) isn't just a spring break capital, but also the prolific source for live aquarium plants and myriads of tropical fish destined for a tank near you (Tampa's EkkWill Water Life Resources spans a million square feet of breeding and hatching facilities, from which they ship some five million fish per month). The program also visits with aquarium professionals at World Pet Expo and drops in on a retailer who offers tips on home aquarium maintenance. Offering a smorgasbord of sights and insights, this title will definitely be of interest to tropical fish enthusiasts. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
