Did you know that the name “Key West” is actually a corrupt translation of the original moniker, “Bone Island?” Although the pirates are long gone, this fascinating outpost of the “Conch Republic” still attracts plenty of visitors, and this fine program, hosted by three likable, multicultural teens, examines the intriguing history and economic development of Key West (from the arrival of 17th-century European settlers through the growth of key industries such as salvaging, sponges, and cigars), while also stopping at some of the local points of interest, including Ernest Hemingway's house. I'll admit that I initially thought this would be a video travel brochure thinly disguised as educational fare, but it turns out that the script is interesting and informative, the hosts are lively and articulate, and the program features great archival footage and photographs. While the subject matter may be a bit narrow, this is a very interesting slice of geographical American history. DVD extras include web links to downloadable teaching materials and information/contacts for planning field trips. Recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)
