The story of a group of merry bagpipers who want to show the world how much fun piping can be, They Pipe Among Us chronicles the coming together of 15 musicians from all walks of life to form an ersatz bagpipe band. Each of the members gets significant screen time to tell his or her personal story (replete with vignettes filmed in the players' home environments) of how each came to play the pipes, while also imparting various facts and observations that ultimately constitute a thumbnail sketch of the history and traditions of the bagpipes. The sound of the pipes is heard throughout, challenging the notion that all bagpipe songs sound alike, while further testimony to the pipes' musical versatility is offered with a unique if not downright haunting treatment of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight" (a world music event not to be missed). The band's story culminates with their only gig, an appearance at the 2002 Canadian curling championships. Gad, talk about your thick cultural stews: bagpipes and curling! A sure hit in Canada, Minnesota, and curling hotbeds worldwide, this is a high-quality, informative program, and entertaining to boot. Recommended. [Note: also available, at the same price, the sequel They Pipe Among Us Too.] Aud: H, C, P. (M. Tribby)
