Disturbing but compelling, this HBO-aired documentary takes viewers behind the walls of Florida's Renfrew Center—a treatment facility for young women with eating disorders—to specifically follow four females (between the ages of 15 and 30) who have nearly killed themselves through anorexia, bulimia, or a combination of both. Director Lauren Greenfield's Thin chronicles their ongoing efforts at recovery (which include periodic relapses and bouts of crippling insecurity), capturing all of the telling psychological details embedded in the daily routines of these women. Interwoven throughout are shocking facts and statistics about the scope of eating disorders, as well as thinly veiled criticism of the healthcare industry for failing to adequately address a growing health issue.
