Thoreau's Walden: A Video Portrait

Photographed by David Marlin, a prize-winning cameraman who shot many of the nature studies seen on CBS's Sunday Morning program, this visual ode to 19th-century philosophical writer Henry David Thoreau's beloved Walden Pond is a joy to watch. It's also an inspiring program to listen to--comprised entirely of quotes from Thoreau's classic tome of reflections on nature, Walden. "Simplicity, simplicity, simplicity, "was Thoreau's clarion call, and one cannot help but gaze across the calm liquid expanse of Walden Pond, and gain an inkling of what he meant. Beautifully filmed, the sights in and around Walden Pond are keyed to passages from Thoreau's writing, capturing the essence of the place during spring, summer, fall, and winter. "We can never have enough of nature," said Thoreau, and this video portrait certainly underscores nature's beauty, while repeating to a new generation the immortal words of one of her greatest and most literate champions.
