Produced in conjunction with the A.S.P.C.A., this compilation of short films highlighting the problems of pet overpopulation is a sobering reminder to all of us about the consequences of too many pets for too little homes. The opening segment "Streetdog" is a moving black and white film shot and narrated from a dog's point-of-view as it wanders the streets in search of food and shelter. In "Blue," a happy song about a man and his dog, accompanied by visuals of a guy cavorting with his pet, is occasionally interrupted by screen messages such as the following: "21,000 dogs are destroyed every day." In fact, the birth/death ratio for dogs and cats is depressingly close. The last two segments of the tape emphasize the importance of spaying and neutering pets, with veterinarians answering commonly asked questions, and a final message from Dr. John Kullberg, the President of the A.S.P.C.A. Inexpensive and containing a humane and important message, Throwaways is highly recommended. (Available from: Focus on Animals, P.O. Box 150, Trumbull, CT 06611.)
