Recounting the contributions made by the United States Navy in World War II, the 13 episodes on the DVD compilation Tigers of the Sea looks at major campaigns in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters, including the attack on Pearl Harbor, the battles for New Guinea and Guadalcanal, the fight to overcome the devastation of the German U-Boats, and many other naval engagements. Combining b&w and color newsreel and archival military film footage, the program gives viewers front row seats to some of the greatest sea battles ever fought, while veterans and historians provide insightful commentary. Extra features include the story of the most famous Iowa class battleship, the U.S.S. Missouri; the evolution of amphibious warfare landing crafts; and the genesis of the Victory and Liberty ships, designed to be built quickly and inexpensively. While far better individual documentaries exist on many of the subjects covered here, the fact that this inexpensive title covers a lot of ground (and water) and includes loads of primary source material, makes it a worthwhile addition to any World War II collection.
