To Go Viking

Filmmaker Matt Poitras here profiles Texas-based medieval re-enactors inspired by the warrior codes and games of the historic Vikings, in particular the formidable "Jomsborg" Vikings, which is the only Viking equivalent of an organized military. Serious about the authenticity of arms, costumes, and combat, these modern barbarians—almost none of whom have Norse ancestry—trek to Northern and Eastern Europe, mingle and train at a Jomsborg Army encampment in Denmark, and enjoy the opportunity to clash in refereed grand battles against like-minded, full-blooded Celts, Slavs, Scandinavians, and Russians—on Polish soil. Modern political differences and upheavals are forgotten during this celebration of archaic warfare, and swastikas even appear in stylized form as ancient tribal sun symbols (which they originally were). A few women participate, mainly in fiber-arts, cookery, and spectating, but no Xena Warrior Princess stuff. Poitras delivers a respectful look at these passionate folk and their striving for total-immersion in a bygone age, which can also entail concussions, dislocations, broken bones, and spear-cuts from competitive sparring.
