Produced by the non-profit and non-partisan Close Up Foundation, this valuable video presents both sides of the gun control issue in America, allowing viewers/students to make up their own minds about which position they support. The personal side of the issue is presented through the stories of two people: Natisha Campbell, a teenager whose best friend, Hank, was gunned down in street violence; and Amy Flemming, who bought a weapon to protect herself and her son against a drug-using, violent ex-husband. The political positions are presented through interviews with Wayne LaPierre, president of the National Rifle Association; Michael Beard, president of the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence; and several others in legal and Congressional positions. At the heart of the debate, of course, is the Second Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and how it's interpreted. The NRA sees it as a fundamental freedom of the individual; others believe that the amendment pertains only to a militia. The excellent teacher's guide provides instructors with a variety of activities, suggested discussions, and handouts. Highly recommended. Aud. J, H, C, P. (S. Fisher)
