A video for the serious--and I do mean serious--railroad fan, non-railroading buffs may find the action of trains moving steel in Trains: Making & Moving Steel on the Rails to be a bit slow and the switching operations on steel-owned railroads even slower. However, true devotees will appreciate the sheer brute force required to transport tons of coal and iron ore on dedicated "steel trains" as well as the mechanical ingenuity displayed in loading and unloading ships delivering raw materials to the mills (in one sequence, an ore car is picked up with huge clamps and turned upside down to empty it). Digital video and stereo sound enhance this program, which also shows the mills in spectacular action as steel is smelted and shaped into finished product. Although a rather extensive plug for Trains magazine is included at the beginning of the tape, this otherwise fine production will appeal to rail enthusiasts and is recommended. Aud: P. (S. Fisher)
