Comprised of 112 time-lapse scenes, Tran Scan is a non-narrative eight-minute transversal of the Trans-Canada highway that takes viewers from the Pacific to the Atlantic at a breakneck pace that gives the appearance of motion (at 3,500 mph, to be precise) but uses no motion picture cameras. Aside from an interactive map that allows viewers to play portions of the program by province, Tran Scan offers no geographical indicators whatsoever (meaning that most viewers will have no clue where they are during most of the brief film). Although the DVD jacket touts the program's “educational value” (and lists geography, social studies, Earth science, and Canadian studies, among others, as relevant subject areas), this is really an art short more notable for its technical achievement (which is definitely impressive) than its actual content. Optional. Aud: C, P. (R. Pitman)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
