Many dream of a vacation where time stops, and according to host Ian Wright here, the Caribbean frontier of the Turks & Caicos Islands is one such place. The island system, featuring eight main islands and hundreds of smaller ones, is surprisingly varied, with some areas home to vibrant communities and others having nary a soul. Providenciales (the most populated) is the first stop, and it tends to be an expensive tourist stay since all supplies need to be transported in. A Club Med boasts a 12-mile beach and is near the third largest enclosed reef system in the world (adjacent to a two-mile drop-off into the Atlantic shelf), featuring huge schools of passing fish, and where divers enjoy crystal-clear visibility. North Caicos has a history of plantations and slaves; at the end of local slavery in 1807, the plantations were abandoned and currently lie in ruins, but the island is still a popular tourist destination. On the way to South Caicos (where there is active conservation efforts to both promote the fishing industry and preserve the fragile habitat of the lemon shark), Wright stays overnight with “Mama Sue,” who is among those encouraged by the tourism board to open their homes with extra bedrooms (and by all accounts, excellent home cooking) to visitors, B&B-style. Viewers will also traverse the wet and spectacular “Milford Track” hiking route in New Zealand with host Zay Harding, which features a hut system for weary travelers to dry off and refuel along what has been called the country's greatest walk. Sure to appeal to armchair travelers, this is recommended. Aud: P. (C. Block)
