One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest meets Reefer Madness in this unusual little tape that shows us in graphic detail the way the manic side of bipolar (i.e. manic-depressive) illness used to be treated: shock treatment, stripped-bare isolation rooms, days of water therapy, and tranquilizing chairs. We eavesdrop on a dramatized session of a manic episode, meet a woman with manic-depressive illness, and listen to experts who discuss the illness and treatments, all amidst jarringly garish lighting and scene-settings. Despite the disturbing film clips of outdated treatments, and the "colorful" transitional stage-dressings, this tape is moderately recommended for the information it presents on an important topic. Other titles in the 13-part Trouble in Mind series (series price: $379.99) include: Schizophrenia, Dementia, Anti-Social Personality Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Eating Disorder, ADD-Attention Deficit Disorder, Psychosomatic Illness and Postpartum Depression.
