There can no longer be any argument: it's officially time to question the Best Director Oscar that Clint Eastwood won in 1992 for Unforgiven; every film Eastwood has made since has been more embarrassing than the last. True Crime, we can only hope, is the nadir: an absurdly melodramatic, dramatically preposterous waste of celluloid about a maverick reporter (guess who) who travels to Death Row to interview a soon-to-be-executed con (Isaiah Washington) for a routine story and--gasp!--becomes convinced that the man is innocent. Idiocy abounds; my personal favorite moment is the one in which Clint finds a key piece of evidence lying conveniently on the floor, open to the relevant page, complete with the previous investigator's handwritten annotation: "Something fishy here..." Not recommended. (M. D'Angelo)
