Filmmakers Stephen Fell and Will Thompson were students at Rice University when they started work on this film for a class assignment. But Unborn in the USA is far removed from the usual student movie: it's a polished and cogent journey into the core of the American anti-abortion movement. Although the U.S. Supreme Court legalized abortion with the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling, anti-abortion forces have continued to campaign for its overturn, most recently targeting college students as the new wave of pro-life spokespersons and marketers. The right-wing Focus on the Family organization is front and center here, with an endless supply of videos, books, and instructors who tutor students on everything from civil disobedience to refuting arguments on the question of aborting a fetus that results from rape. Unborn in the USA maintains a neutral partisan balance, and the people featured here are neither idealized nor ridiculed for their positions. Given the fact that the abortion issue remains at the forefront of debate in the current presidential campaigns, this insightful film is also a timely one. DVD extras include deleted scenes and follow-up interviews. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (P. Hall)
