This is a kind of all-singing, all-dancing People magazine-level omnibus on contemporary Latino culture with a smattering of history, a big dose of ethnic pride, and a lot of colorful, kinetic pictures of cultural icons like low-riders (at a custom shop, expensive imported chrome wheels and other must-have items of personal aggrandizement are ogled), barbershop hangers-out (barbers, we are informed, are plugged into the Latin hip-hop scene), and urban Latino musicians. Given the popularity of this sort of frenetic cultural self-examination on MTV and in related forums, this title would probably circulate well, and not just among Latino youth, since “cool” crosses ethnic lines very easily. Ultimately, however, this celebratory and self-congratulatory little piece of fluff--while upbeat, flashy, and danceable--is strictly optional. Aud: P. (M. Tribby)
