Aiming to give young students an idea of the value of elements from the Earth's crust, Uses of Rocks and Minerals shows how concrete, brick, asphalt, and steel are produced, as well as products and processes somewhat removed from their "earthy" origins, such as glass, and objects of beauty, like precious gemstones. While the video does touch briefly on ecological concerns related to mining, the narrator assures us that strip mines become reclaimed land, with the questionable implication that it's just as good. Much of this information is covered in Real World Science: Rocks and Minerals (VL-3/00); still, those without similar fare will want to consider this reasonably priced overview. Also available at the same price from 100% Educational Videos, the companion volume Rocks: Solid Earth Materials. Aud: E, I. (R. Reagan)

Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
