Before imploding in 2008, Velvet Revolver was seen as a musical super-group done (mostly) right, with former Guns N' Roses members Slash (guitar), Duff McKagan (bass), and Matt Sorum (drums) backing lead singer Scott Weiland, himself an exile from the highly successful Stone Temple Pilots. In this off-kilter 12-song 2004 concert, staged at Houston's Verizon Wireless Theater, the band—joined by supporting guitarist Dave Kushner—focuses heavily on songs from their first album Contraband, performing tracks such as “Sucker Train Blues” and “Slither” with workmanlike aplomb, while also tossing in a few GNR and STP songs. But the latter efforts—including “Sex Type Thing” and “Used to Love Her”—are disappointing, compared to the originals. Even worse, Weiland is in dreadful form, huffing and puffing about the stage, exhausted and disconnected while his mates blast through “Do It for the Kids” and “Big Machine.” Adding insult to injury, the concert footage is intercut with pointless Q&A ramblings, behind-the-scenes footage, and random shots of Playboy playmate Irina Voronina in Nazi garb, offering political statements. Presented in DTS 5.1, Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, this is not a necessary purchase. (B. Gibron)
