Drawing on the history of “intentional communities” over the last 2,500 years, Visions of Utopia provides a glimpse into the inner workings of shared-living communities. Historical examples include the 6th century B.C. Buddhist Sagha, the Iroquois Confederacy, and Christian monasteries, while more recent examples include the Mennonites, the Amish, Robert Owens' New Harmony colony, and seven diverse contemporary efforts, ranging from a meditation/yoga community called Ananda Village in California to North Carolina's Earthaven, an "ecovillage" demonstration and teaching center. The program explores the establishment of “ground rules,” how conflicts are resolved, and the ways group decisions are made, as various members discuss the benefits as well as the challenges of community living. Presenting an interesting overview of an alternative social paradigm that will fill a gap in most collections, this is recommended. [Note: a second volume, highlighting more modern communities, is currently in production.] Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
