The American soldiers who served during World War II, often called the “greatest generation,” have been the subject of many books and films. Notably less attention has been paid to the German soldiers against whom they fought, who are the subject of the six 50-minute episodes compiled in Voices From Hitler's Army. Combining archival footage and narration with observations from white-haired veterans (and stills of their younger selves in uniform), the first episode centers on the experience of soldiers who engaged in the “lightning” form of attack called the blitzkrieg (enormously successful in Poland and France, less so in Russia). The next three programs focus on particular elements of the German military: one on Goering's air force (with special emphasis on the Battle of Britain), the second on the Waffen SS (Hitler's “elite” force), and the third on submarine crews. The final two episodes turn to specific campaigns, the first the failed invasion of the Soviet Union (with special emphasis on the battle of Stalingrad) and the second covering the last-ditch defense of Berlin in April 1945. While there is some repetition here, the narration is sound and the historical footage provides excellent context. But the major value of this set lies in the testimony of the German veterans, who recall their youth and unquestioning patriotism, but also look back on the war with sorrow and regret (in fact, some of their recollections may generate an unexpected degree of sympathy).
