In the "all new for '02" version of Hatzoff Production's Washington State's Emerald City: Seattle (see VL-10/90 for review of earlier edition), viewers get a wonderful peek at my backyard (and, since this is a tourist-family-friendly film, there are, of course, no graphic shots of pelting down rain). Starting with a ride to the top of the Space Needle (built in 1962 for the World's Fair), armchair travelers begin with a sweeping cityscape view, before descending to check out the sights in the Seattle Center, including the Pacific Science Center, Key Arena (home to the Seattle Supersonics), and the EMP (i.e., the butt-ugly, Frank Gehry-designed Experience Music Project museum). In addition to sharing a bit of history about this city built on hills, the program offers nicely-lensed highlights of the cultural, art and architectural, shopping, and recreational attractions in the Emerald City, including the bustling Pike Place Market, historic Pioneer Square (where visitors can take an underground tour and see old Seattle, built on top of the city after a fire in 1889 razed downtown), the Woodland Park Zoo, the Seattle Art Museum, the University of Washington campus (my alma mater), and neighboring attractions, such as Mt. Rainier. Like we said of the earlier edition, this is "a great introduction to one of the most livable cities in the U.S." Highly recommended. Aud: P. (R. Pitman)
