Jean Nidetch, founder of the world's oldest group weight control organization, is profiled in this fine A&E Biography entry which, while occasionally lapsing into puff piece promotion for WW, nonetheless capably traces the 38-year history of Weight Watchers from its humble beginnings in the basement of Nidetch's home to today's multinational, billion-dollar company. While there is little controversy here (no comparison of Weight Watchers with similar organizations such as TOPS, for instance), the tape's real strength is in its focus on how one woman broke through the corporate glass ceiling. Nidetch saw a need, capitalized on it, and in the process became not only one of the most influential figures in our weight-conscious society, but one of a mere handful of exceptionally successful 20th century business women who could serve as a role model to young girls. Recommended for health and business collections. Aud: P. (J. Carlson)
