The U.S. Army's military academy at West Point, NY, holds fundraisers, including a hugely popular annual paintball competition that draws weekend warriors into simulated battlefield challenges. Organized and hosted by the academy's officers and cadets—with an emphasis on fun—what is called “scenario paintball” takes place over an entire weekend and is set on rough, hilly terrain that is often socked in by fog. Despite that handicap and the strenuous physical demands, the game draws enthusiasts who come well-prepared with customized paintball guns, Nerf missiles, mini-tanks, and serious hardware to protect head and body. The competition is high-level but structured, with rules designed to ensure player safety. Filmmaker Jay Alan Lavely deftly captures the exciting action in this documentary that—regardless of what one thinks of paintball—is marked by a surprisingly infectious spirit. Recommended. Aud: P.
