Self-professed "booty expert" Dee-Dee, a young Brooklyn barber, likes big-butted girls with no cellulite and zero stretch marks, like the babes from the pages of Maxim plastered all over his workspace wall. But in Jesse Epstein's humorous and eye-opening short Wet Dreams and False Images, Dee-Dee and his barbershop homies are shown just how doctored-up that au naturel look really is when they watch a videotape featuring a digital retouch expert who explains that airbrushing has been taken to a whole new level as he demonstrates how easy it is to remove stretch marks and pock marks, smooth out thighs, reduce knobby knuckles, alter skin tone, add freckles, narrow noses, and more. Even faced with the evidence, true believer Dee-Dee and his pals remain a bit skeptical. A perfect title for high school audiences, Wet Dreams and False Images unfortunately includes some raw language (one of Dee-Dee's buddies says "you fucked up his dream") that will make educators nervous about showing this in class. Still, for more adventurous high schools, as well as larger public libraries and academic collections, this powerful little lesson in media manipulation is recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (R. Pitman)
