An engaging, witty, wonderful introduction to the exciting world of plants, What Makes a Plant a Plant?, one of three titles in the Growing Plants series, teaches children how plants (just like humans) breathe, drink, eat, and grow, as humorous host Mr. Rotovator takes kids on a tour around both his own garden and a larger botanical garden. Combining live-action time-lapse and close-up photography with animation, the program is sure to appeal to its target audience, especially with its imaginative and clever setups (in one segment Mr. Rotovator and his young charges build a huge flower using vegetables to match plant parts--potatoes for the root structure, celery stalks for the stem, etc.). Originally airing on the BBC, this innovative introduction to plants is highly recommended. The other two titles in the series are: How Do Plants Grow and Change? and Where Do New Plants Come From? Aud: K, E. (E. Gieschen)
