Narrated by actor Jeff Goldblum, this series explores five "lost world" areas on the planet--from Argentina and Antarctica to the badlands of Montana--and looks at over 40 species of dinosaurs, recreated through the magic of computer animation. Habitat, migration, eating habits, and social structures are examined, along with more specific details such as which species had night vision or hibernated throughout the winter (in fact, one of the most interesting aspects of the series is the behind-the-scenes look at the methods used by the paleontologists to figure this stuff out). In addition to visiting various excavation sites to see how dinosaur bones are recovered, the program also uses computer animation to point out the geological changes that have taken place over millions of years. One site of interest is in the Australian outback where a stone highway of 3,300 dinosaur prints from 160 different animals exists! Although Goldblum's narration gets a bit cheeky at times, this is a surprisingly good series overall--and keep in mind that this review refers to the DVD version--that will engage viewers of all ages. Extra DVD features include a Q&A section and an index by species (the librarian in me jumps for joy at the "i" word!). A solid companion to recent titles such as Fox Video's 2-DVD set Walking with Dinosaurs (VL-5/00), this is recommended. Aud: I, J, H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
