Although Christianity is observed by more than two billion followers around the world, disagreements persist as to the role of the historical Jesus in first-century Palestine. Alexander Marengo's informative Discovery Channel-aired documentary describes the man and his mission, separating myths and misconceptions from known facts, while drawing upon insights from a biblical scholar, an archaeologist, and a theologian. During Jesus' lifetime, the Holy Land was a harsh place marked by poverty, disease, punitive taxation, brutal Roman occupation, and hypocrisy among Jewish high priests. Jesus' concern for social justice and compassion is clearly evident, illustrated by his sermons and acts, including chasing the money changers from the Jerusalem Temple. Such behavior threatened the established order, however, ultimately sealing his martyrdom. Against the backdrop of ancient and modern Israel, scholars describe the world of Jesus as a perilous environment where ruling class privileges contrasted with roadside banditry, high infant mortality was the norm, and crucifixion loomed as a stark Roman warning against dissent. The program describes what is known about the birth of Jesus (he was probably born in a cave, not a stable), methods he used to recruit disciples, what he might have looked like, the agonizing hours of the Last Supper, and his betrayal. As for the resurrection, the basic message here is that this is the point where scholarship, history, and archaeology stand aside for faith. A fine and balanced profile that will appeal to true believers and secular history buffs alike, this is highly recommended. Aud: C, P. (S. Rees)
