I was in the public library trenches long enough to realize that assignments on "mammals" are never going to scamper, slink, or slither away, so I have trouble containing my anticipation whenever I come across anything to add to the 599 arsenal. Part of the "Wild Encounters" series, this moose tape provides details on diet, mating, enemies, antlers, socialization, and other life cycle concerns, complete with gorgeous cinematography and well-filmed wildlife scenes. A moose's solitary lifestyle renders it somewhat less interesting than those mammals that live in groups; the only time these critters meet is during mating season. As such, a good portion of the tape is on that process (though no "action" is shown), and words like "estrus" and "ovulation" are bandied about, somewhat lessening the tape's usefulness for the elementary-school set. Though some details are overlooked (no map of the moose's worldwide turf; no really serious sparring amongst competing, "horny" males; no mention of lifespan or whether moose ever eat meat or insects; weight and measurements given only in kilograms and meters), this inexpensive tape provides a solid, if not homework-oriented, overview of these twig-chompin', antler-wearin', lake-swimmin', solo-goin' creatures. Recommended. Other titles in the Wild Encounters series include: Caribou: Ghost of the North, Cougar: Elusive Predator and Grizzly: Monarch of the Wilderness. Aud: J, P. (K. Glaser)
