Putting the word “pretentious” back into the wine appreciation vocabulary where it belongs, Wine Fundamentals presents a rather dry but exhaustive study of the revered but unassuming little grape. Onscreen host John Champion begins the program by announcing,“First rule: ignore all the rules. Don't overanalyze.” Then, along with world renowned wine aficionados--including Tim Hanni, John Richburg, Romuald Toulon, and Dobri Kiprov, among others--he proceeds to offer up countless rules as they unabashedly overanalyze the subject for the next 120 minutes. Nicely paced and well-organized, this excellent program looks at Old World (specific European regions) and New World (North and South America, Africa, and Austria) wines, explains the rating systems and regulations governing various regions, employs a flavor wheel to help illustrate the chemical compounds and complex flavors (over 500!) present in wine, describes the winemaking process, and shares numerous tips on reading labels and wine lists, selecting and tasting, storing and serving, and more. For you health-conscious oenophiles, Wine Fundamentals reiterates that wine consumption in moderation reduces heart attacks and offers other healthy bennies. DVD extras include a wine glossary, quick tips on ordering wine for a business dinner, and wine-friendly recipes. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (N. Plympton)
