If people in both Great Britain and the United States were asked to name the most influential leader during World War II, chances are their response would be "Winston Churchill." This brash, profane, hard-living, eccentric politician has gained a mythic status in our contemporary history. Much of it is well-deserved; the thought of England during the darkest days of the war without the growled eloquence of her Prime Minister is unimaginable. But leave it to professor and storyteller Elliot Engel to present a more balanced picture of Churchill, a man who rose to greatness in spite of himself. Churchill is presented here in all of his glory (warts included): his sudden entrances and exits from power, his curious habits upon rising in the morning, his unusual choice of what to wear in bed, his feeling of being snubbed by the Royal Family; this and so much more is covered. Media Consultants would do well to consider releasing Engel's lectures on audiocassette as well; they would certainly be a welcome companion on a long trip. Recommended. Aud: C, P. (J. Carlson)
