In the ultimate example of not wanting to work for "the man," the 18 women interviewed on this tape represent nearly 50 years of independent-feminist film and video production, distribution, and education. Their work expresses a variety of political and aesthetic viewpoints, and their interests range from the images of blacks in early cinema, to the rights of prostitutes, to a look at American communists--though always with a feminist spin. Combining interviews with film clips from the women's work, the tape has a hip, fresh look and does a good job of presenting each woman's--and decade's--history and personality. While naturally a bit heavy on the "you too can choose to live outside the crushing confines of the nuclear family and middle-class conformity" ethos, and containing quite a bit of nudity and profanity, this tape is nonetheless highly recommended for more sophisticated women's studies and film collections. Star Ratings
As of March 2022, Video Librarian has changed from a four-star rating system to a five-star one. This change allows our reviewers to have a wider range of critical viewpoints, as well as to synchronize with Google’s rating structure. This change affects all reviews from March 2022 onwards. All reviews from before this period will still retain their original rating. Future film submissions will be considered our new 1-5 star criteria.
