Wonders of the African World

Retracing the ancient paths to long lost metropolises and centers of learning that have left cultural and historic imprints on the people of Africa today, this illuminating series, hosted by Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., journeys back in time to the early civilizations of the African continent. Viewers will discover the ancient splendor of Timbuktu (where salt was once traded ounce for ounce with gold), visit the remains of the Great Zimbabwe (the remains of an ancient religious shrine that gave its name to the country), and travel to Ethiopia (a Christian kingdom for over 1,600 years and home of the Ark of the Covenant). Gates also explores the roots of the transatlantic slave trade, noting that many African kingdoms acquired great wealth by selling their own people, while exploring the bloody tumultuous history of the Swahili coast. In addition, Gates looks at issues surrounding apartheid, the African people's rediscovery of their pre-colonial past, and the new emerging society in South Africa. A terrific series that ultimately encourages people of all nationalities to connect with their cultural past, this engaging documentary uses interviews with locals--from shopkeepers to kings--and stunning on-location cinematography of the beautiful and varied African landscapes to present an intriguing inside look at African heritage.
