Hosted by Roger Mudd, WWII: The Lost Color Archives presents recently discovered color film footage taken by journalists, professionals, soldiers and civilians recording significant people, places and events from the Second World War, accompanied by letters and diary excerpts from diplomats, soldiers and civilians. In the DVD review copy, narrated by actor Edward Herrmann, the first disc opens in 1937, and features the rise of fascism in Spain, the coronation of King George VI of England, and Hitler's political ascension in pre-war Germany. Viewers watch events unfold as Germany invades Eastern Europe and marches on to Stalingrad, and the Japanese bomb Pearl Harbor, effectively extending the continental conflict into global war. The second disc begins in June 1944 as Allied forces prepare for the Normandy invasion, and includes looks at the Battle of the Bulge, the fall of the Third Reich, the liberation of the Nazi death camps, and the nuclear attacks on Japan, before concluding with VE and VJ day celebrations. The second compilation of WWII color footage available on both VHS and DVD (the first is Goldhil Video's superb WWII in Color [VL-3/99]), WWII: The Lost Color Archives (which is not for the fainthearted or weak stomached!) will make an excellent supplement to any WWII collection. Highly recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (L. Stevens)
