A member of the Grammy-winning '90s hip-hop trio The Fugees as well as a moderately successful solo artist, Haiti-born musician Wyclef Jean is the coordinator and host for this 2001 concert fundraiser for Clef's Kids, Jean's performing-arts sponsorship program for New York City children. Kicking things off with an exuberant jaunt through the Carnegie Hall audience to the tune of “Minnie the Moocher,” Jean keeps the energy high with his glowing intros of performers (he bows down to “one of my favorites in the whole wide world” Eric Clapton) and jesting banter (he tells the crowd “I'm the new Sammy Davis Jr.--I'm liked by everyone”). Standout tracks include Charlotte Church's harp-backed version of “Ave Maria,” Third World's “Now That We Found Love” featuring Stevie Wonder, and Jean's tunes, covers, and duets “No Woman No Cry” (with Steven Marley), the mournful “911” with Mary J. Blige, “Gone ‘Til November” (featuring Wonder, who rattles off catchy reggae-style scat), and the Grammy-winning “Maria Maria,” as well as pop snacks “Say My Name” and “Independent Women” by Destiny's Child. Also, several “Clef's Kids” perform, including a 17-year-old saxophonist who nails “Amazing Grace.” Presented in DTS, Dolby Digital 5.1 and stereo, DVD extras include bonus interviews with the kids and the stars. Highly recommended. Aud: P. (J. Williams-Wood)
