According to this Canadian production, over half the ads on television and in magazines tell us how important it is to be beautiful. Half! No wonder tapes of the "self-esteem/self-confidence/self-respect" genre are needed--especially those geared toward teens--and this tape fills the bill quite nicely. In the brief span of 28 minutes, sensible-sounding young adults tell us about puberty, body ideals through the ages, fads, the '60s, bulimia, steroids, exercise and proper diet, how advertising really works, and the importance of balance in your life. It sounds like a lot, I know, but I believe that the message comes through that there are alternatives to the "thin female/muscular male" myth, as well as that true beauty stems from a healthy, balanced lifestyle. Recommended as a companion title or for those without In the Mix: Self-Image--The Fantasy, the Reality (VL-7/98). Aud: J, H, P. (K. Glaser)
