Youth Against Meth: Not Even Once

This entry from the long-running PBS-aired series In the Mix focuses on the Montana Meth Project, a large-scale prevention program (largely run by young people) that informs potential first-time users (mostly teens) of the real risks and consequences involved in using methamphetamines, one of the most addictive substances known to humankind. When the effort was launched, use of the drug (which is relatively cheap and easy to obtain) had reached epidemic levels in Montana and elsewhere. The multi-pronged Montana Meth Project campaign worked to not only dispel misinformation about meth, but also open up much-needed dialogue—between parents and children, citizens and legislators, and teachers and students. The offensive included a media blitz of graphic, yet absolutely honest, print and television ads; a “Paint the State” public art contest that covered buses, buildings, and billboards with huge anti-meth murals; and a march on the state capitol to petition for continued support. The result was a major drop in meth usage and the adoption of similar programs in other states. Youth Against Meth combines footage of the crusaders in action, comments from organizers and participants (including former users), and samples of the group's highly effective advertisements, offering both a disturbing look at a deadly problem and an inspiring example of young people's power to make a huge difference in their communities.
