Originally produced as a slide/tape program, this short overture to the life and writings of Pulitzer Prize winning playwright, novelist, journalist, and poet Zona Gale (1874-1938), is an arresting montage of old photographs, creatively presented, and supplemented with first person narration from her writings. Impressionistic, rather than chronological, the program recalls snippets from Gale's beginning years as a writer (she remembers hearing the heavy manuscripts thud to the floor from the mail slot--the sound of rejections), shares her trenchant observations of small-town Portage, WI (with more trees than people), and samples some of her mature fiction. This is a charming video, which brings to life someone forgotten, spurring the viewer to want to discover more. Recommended. (Available from: Jocelyn Riley, Box 5264-Hilldale, Madison, WI 53705.)
