Even in the Wild West of the Internet, laws of the land must still be followed, although copyright law can be murky and confusing. For instance, when is it okay to copy a CD to your computer? E-Pirates of the Digital Age looks at the brave semi-new world of technology copyright law: defining copyright, exploring issues related to using copyrighted material, the consequences of piracy, and the importance of respecting intellectual property. Since this is an Australian production, the facts and figures presented relate only to that country, but much of the overall content remains applicable to U.S. software, music, and game general usage (the most significant differences between the two countries lie in the areas of copyright ownership and “fair use”—termed “fair dealing” in Australia). Here, musicians explain how piracy hurts them individually and the music industry in general, and teens talk about why they use illegal file-sharing to obtain content (sites such as MySpace and YouTube serve as examples in discussing the difference between posting/viewing original content and downloading copyrighted material). A solid look, overall, at a hot topic issue, this is recommended. Aud: J, H, P. (E. Gieschen)
