In this beautifully shot b&w film by Gyula Gazdag, a charming Budapest waif named Andris (David Vermes), whose mother was killed by a falling brick, goes searching for his unknown father (Andris was the product of one magical evening with a dark, handsome stranger at an opera). Finding his father listed in the state records, Andris goes after "Joseph Orban," not realizing that Orban, a kooky idealist, is the official who signed the birth record, not his dad. But the pair do cross paths in one of the most beautiful fantasy endings in recent memory. A winning combination of political satire and fairy tale yearning for what is unquestionably one of the most basic desires of humankind: to be free. Highly recommended. (R. Pitman)
