In the early part of this century, lynchings were common in this country, and not only in the south. In August 1930, 16-year-old James Cameron became an unwitting accomplice to a lovers lane robbery and murder of a white man. Indiana was then a hotbed of Klan activity and, whipped into a frenzy by false rumors that the murdered man's fiancee had been raped, mobs broke into the Marion County jail and lynched two black men while police officials looked on. Cameron's life was spared at the last moment. In this video, Cameron vividly recalls his brush with mob injustice. Recommended. Aud: H, C, P. (S. Rees)
